World #5 Zverev has a great record here in Rome, winner in 2017 finalist in 2018 and 18-6 career win-loss here. He's won both his first two matches here this term vs tricky opponents in straight sets and in Borges (ranked 53) faces a player whom I believe is a tad lucky to get this far. The 27yo Portuguese sneaked past Martinez in R1 (a match he had no right to win) and then faced a seemingly unmotivated Bublik, then struggled past #240 ranked Passaro in a decider.

She bumped into an improver on her final start as a 3yo in October when dropped to this sort of level but she's been nearer the front tnan the back in all hetr starts and a 1lb rise in the ratings looks unlikely to prevent a bold showing in this company.

Since winning in Estoril (where he didn’t beat anyone of note), world #9 Hurkacz has (as in seasons past) looked average on clay, as always using his serve to propel him to victory. Against better opposition (on dirt) he’s been brushed aside - Ruud and even fellow big server Fritz. A win over the fading Nadal with his weakened serve and diminished movement/return game fail to convince, neither do close wins over struggling Altmaier and Challenger level players like Choinski and Llamas Ruiz or a declining Bautista Agut. And here I’m opposing him with a top-30 natural clay courter with a strong serve and forehand combination + more attacking spin. It’s been an odd European clay swing for the 24yo Argentine, running into Tsitsipas and Ruud (champions of the tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona), but he has an excellent clay court game, plays aggressively and should be able to rack up service holds against a fairly poor returner.

For his part, Paul has a pretty poor record on the red stuff, the 26yo American is just 2-7 on the dirt since Jan 2022 vs players ranked between 10 and 60. He has a terrible record here in Rome, 3-4 career and in his only previous attempt at this event (albeit four years ago) Koepfer made the QFs from Qualies.

Teh 30yo American is on her "farewell tour" having announced her retirement at seasons end and she had a 15 match wom streak going after grabbing titles in Miami (hard) and Charleston (US clay). That run was stopped by world #2 Sabalenka in Madrid in a deciding set and Collins' prior defeat was to world #1 Swiatek. She's not played in Rome much (6-3) but with the fine weather she should enjoy conditions. She has a 4-0 H2H record over Garcia (ranked 31), all straight sets wins, incl. at Miami this year. Bet of the day for me here as Richard Spencer's 3yo gelding clearly likes it here at Newcastle. He trounced his rivals in a 7f handicap here in March (3 to 4 lengths clear through the last 2 furlongs, the field well strung out behind). He was then an excellent second in class 2 over C&D 6 weeks ago, where the third and fourth had been running consistently in decent AW handicaps this winter, so the form of that race looks very solid in the context of this lower class race.

The issue I have with the 25yo Greek is his inability to break serve consistently and that single handed backhand can break down. Struff is in decent form and the tall 34yo German's big serve has held up well in his clay swing so far. The Portman team have been going pretty well (3 winners from their last 12 runners) and whilst this 3yo Zoustar fally's 3 qualifying runs weren't much to write home about, her hadnicap debut LTO over this 7f trip at Chelmsford 32 days ago held more promise, finishing 4th of 8 just 2 lengths back. Dropped anopther 2 pounds here and Rab Havlin booked (he's steered just 6 for the yard the last 12 months, but 3 have placed). Trainer does well with this family and worth a shot in a weak race.

With four places on offer here I'll chance Fergal O'Brien's 6yo Epaulette mare who won what's turned out to be a decent bumper at Ascot last ferbraury. Rather forgetable qualifying efforts over hurdles but left those behind to make a successful handicap debut at Huntingdon (20.5f) in March then improved again to follow up at Hereford (21.7f, good) 24 days ago. Has been raised 6 lb for that but further progress likely, cheekpieces on first time, and yard running at about a 20% strike-rate at present.

Two players who've lost 3 of their last 5 matches but I think Martinez (ranked 51) is in better overall form, the 27yo Spaniard made teh Final in Estoril last month then the QFs in Bucharest. A loss at home in Madrid perhaps no check (he's 0-4 in the altitude) and i acn't imagine he was that fired up for the Aix en Provence Challenger prior to this 1000 Masters series event. Borges (ranked 53) has done better on hard courts the past 2 seasons, the 27yo Portuguese made the final of the Phoenix Challenger in March but is just 13-11 on clay since Jan 2023 (Martinez is 47-31 on clay in the same period).

Bit of a punt but the record of Fernandez (ranked 34) on clay is rather mixed and the 21yo Canadian has been better in faster conditions, like Madrid. She won't get that here in Rome, and in Bogdan (ranked 63) she faces an opponent who's very much at home on clay. Fernandez is 10-12 on clay since 2021 vs top 100 ranked players. Her 31yo Romanian opponent is 15-16 with the same parameters

Osorio (ranked |) made the R16 here in Rome last season via Qualies and the 22yo Colombian is a true clay-courter and in good form this year having recaptured the title of her home event in Bogota last month. Rus (ranked 49) is so up and down on clay and although she beat Swiatek here back in 2020, her opverall record in Rome isn't amazing. She's 13-14 vs top 100 ranked opposition since 2021, Osorio is 16-10.

Chris Mason's 6yo gelding has gradually improved with racing and has a win + 2 places from 4 runs here at Windsor and 5 wins from just 18 career runs. Was a decent second of 9 in a handicap here (6f, good to firm) on his seasonal bow 14 days ago - beaten by a horse I'd backed/tipped. Dug in nicely that day and should strip much fitter so should go well again.

Emmal Lavelle's 7yo Walk In The Park gelding had a decent career in hurdles but was rather disappointing started over fences. However, showed much more like his winning timber form when fourth in a handicap chase at Ascot (21f, good to soft) in March, that despite being short of room before the last. Major player with more still to offer.

This 3yo filly got off the mark on her handicap debut LTO when taking a 12-runner C&D handicap (good to firm) 14 days ago. Has only been nudged up 1 lb so surely has to go close again given this just a fifth career start.

Joseph O'Brien's 4yo Frankel filly was only just touched off by a neck when second of 10 to White Birch in the Alleged Stakes here over on C&D on her reappearance (heavy) 16 days ago. Has very good form in the book and should be the main rivall now given the late withdrawals

John Joseph Murphy's Ulysses colt rather dropped off after his third in teh Epsom Derby last year but has a win under his belt already this term when taking the 10-runner Alleged Stakes over C&D on reappearance (heavy, 10/3) 16 days ago by a neck from Maxux, driven out. Shouldn't be much between them again here.

Taking a shot with one at a price here as - favourite aside - there's a lot in this with "promise" but questions to be answered. Same applies to Fergal O'Brien's 5yo Blue Bresil mare but she showed some promise on first of 2 starts in bumpers when third on heavy ground at Huntingdon. This will clearly show more and I'm willing to take a shot at this price.

This 5yo daughter of Nathaniel has been in my Tracker when a very decent stayer on Flat for Jessica Harrington (rathed 97 at her peak). She was bought for 65,000 gns and placed with for Greenall & Guerriero. She shaped with plenty of encouragement when sent over timber in a first-time hood at Market Rasen (2m) 5 weeks ago. Should improve with that experience and given her class angle, she'll need something special to beat her here.

De Sousa is clearly in good form at this stage of his return - a classic win under his belt already - and it was interesting that he was booked for the seasonal retun of this 4yo Camacho filly LTO when she was a decent third of 8 in a handicap at Doncaster (6f, soft) 9 days ago. Steps up in trip here and she looks like she's been ready for that for a while.

This 6yo mare is notthe most reliable or prolific with just 2 career wins, but once was off a higher mark than this and with today's pilot, Josphine Gordon, abaord. Ran really well on return from a break here over C&D 8 days ago on soft ground, the drying conditions should help and mark unchanged.

I just feel that at this price, Tony Carroll's 8yo is worth a small play. Had a reasonable pipe-openr after a break LTO at Nottingham 16 days ago, drops another 2 pounds and has a decent 7 pound claimer aboard. Has a win and a place in 3 runs over this C&D and now 15 pounds below LWM (though that was 3 years ago). But has been pretty consistent and this is an open heat.

Bit of a stab here, but it woudl seem that Brian Meehan's 3yo Starspangledbanner gelding has been showing some ability in his work at home and he shaped well on his debut in a 7f maiden at Ascot last September, keeping on at the finish having dwelt at the start. Ran with less obvious promise next time in a 1m maiden at HQ but is bred to suit 8f - 10f.
