Wahraan was a very useful performer for Sir Michael Stoute earlier in his career, winning twice as a three-year-old prior to running his best race when a close fifth in a competitive handicap over today's C&D. He caught the eye on his third run for Jamie Osborne at Windsor last time out, losing plenty of ground early due to a tardy start before staying on well for third. The son of Le Havre has dropped four lb below his last winning mark providing he makes a better start today he should go close.

Karl Burke runs four in the feature race of the day at York. I like to back a runner that has a run under their belt for this Group 2 sprint. Spycatcher would enjoy more rain and is drawn away from the pace horse Art Power. Marshman loves it at York and can bounce back following a below par run at Newmarket in the Abernant Stakes. On his first run this season he was run down late by Montassib at Doncaster in a listed race on soft ground. This quick course suits the smooth travelling Marshman who is nicely drawn in stall 14 near the pace horses.

The John & Sean Quinn trained Mr Wagyu has been around for years and goes well in these big field sprint handicaps. Six furlongs is his best trip, and he is down to a good handicap mark of 91. Last year he finished 3 lengths behind winner Bielsa off a 7lb higher mark when drawn very high. I like that he ran well on his first run back this season at Ripon last month giving lumps of weight to winner, Glorious Angel. The rain yesterday has turned the ground mainly good which will suit this nine-year-old. Jason Hart rides with Mr Wagyu nicely drawn in stall 11.

Kihavah looks to have been laid out for this valuable handicap following two warm up runs. He didn’t endure a hard race at Newmarket when beaten 10 lengths by Bague D’or over 1m6f. Kihavah won twice over course and distance last season on both fast and good ground. The rain today will have softened the ground up to no better than good which is fine. Kihavah won at Ayr over 1m5f last season so will stay a truly run 1m4f at York strongly. Oisin Murphy comes in for the ride with Tom Marquand ridden for his boss William Haggas.

Mark Loughnane's Starfighter hasn't won on turf in almost two years. Currently, he's competing off a rather appealing mark of 60, which is two lbs lower than his last winning mark on turf, and he showed promising signs when he finished third at Kempton recently. This eight-year-old looks like he could be about to turn a corner. This evening he has his trainers talented son Billy onboard, and should go close,

Charlie Johnston's string have been running well this season and his LEagle Aid is a Free Eagle gelding who showed hints of ability in his three two-year-old runs back in December. They were all around a mile on the all-weather with the best of them coming on his debut, but the late start to his two-year-old career suggests he had been slow to come to hand, that means he makes his turf and handicap debut off what looks like a workable mark, and this step up in trip should be to his liking judged on his pedigree. A step-up from what he has shown so far would not surprise in a race where the Johnston runners have usually run well in recent times.

The Georgina Nicholls trained Musique De Fee has struggled in softer than ideal conditions over hurdles after showing promise in a good ground bumper at Stratford last June, but she showed big improvement on her second start after wind surgery when winning over course and distance last month. That was back on good ground, the same conditions she encounters here, she would've won more comfortably than three-quarters of a length had she jumped the last two better, so a four lb rise may not stop her going in again.

Rare Middleton is a strong fancy in the Swinton Hurdle. He travelled like a dream on spring ground at Cheltenham last month when beaten a neck by Tintintin. I think he can reverse placings with Tintintin around pan flat Haydock. Rare Middleton has lots of conditions in his favour in this race. The distance of one mile seven and a half furlongs places the emphasis on speed over stamina on this flat course. This horse caught my attention earlier in the season when winning easily at Doncaster over an extended two miles. He has bags of speed and Harry Cobden can ride him with confidence off a nice weight of 11-2.

The Victoria Cup is always one of the best sprint handicaps early in the turf season. It's tough with 25 runners and I like to have proven handicap form in the bag. Ramazan ran some fantastic races last season as an eight-year-old against his elders. He won the racing league leg at Chepstow last season off a rating of 98. That win came over 7 furlongs on good to soft ground. He backed up with a massive run in the Ayr Gold Cup, beaten a neck by Significantly. Ramazan showed he has the speed to lay up over six furlongs and the stamina to win over seven furlongs. He finished off last season with a nose defeat in a listed 7f race at Redcar. The handicapper has rated Ramazan 105, and I like that trainer Richard Fahey offers help by booking good 5lb claimer Joe Leavy. Ramazan warmed up with a nice run in a conditions race at Thirsk.

Clearpoint finished fourth of 12 that day, and although he did not get the best of passages, he came home strong and should come on for that effort. He was dropped a lb and is still running off a workable mark and William Carver's three lb claim will certainly help his chances. The last ten winners of this race have all been drawn between one and four, so Clearpoint's draw in stall three gives him a big opportunity at this tight track.
