Cox must have liked what he saw in the son of Justify’s first breeze on the turf last week, as he’s thrown him straight into a graded stake for his turf debut. Having overcome a troubled trip to break his maiden two starts back, the $1.2M purchase followed up to win going away last time at Turfway, shaping as if the added ground today should be to his benefit. TENNESSEE’s dam, Zinzay, finished second in Keenland’s G2 Jessamine Stakes and he is a half brother to stakes winner Moon Over Miami, as well as high level performer Mozay, indicating that he will relish the turf. Jose Ortiz produced a +406% ROI on the turf at this meet last year and he gets a rare call from Cox for the ride today. I can see this horse massively outrunning his odds.

Timberlake’s win last time was solid performance and he has a lot of trends pointing towards him as being the winner. Muth looks the main competition but he has to take his A-game outside of California for the first time.

He overcame post position ten to win last time out - his first time going two turns, and the form of that allowance race is respectable. Behind him in second was Willy D’s, who had previously finished only 3 1/4 lengths behind Woodcourt, who went on to finish fourth to Timberlake in the Rebel on his next start. Further back in fourth was Brad Cox’s Awesome Road, who had finished fourth in the Southwest Stakes on his prior start. Time For Truth was also giving 9lbs to Willy D’s last time which only makes the performance more impressive. He is one of only four horses to have run a 100+ ESF, is well drawn in gate four, won last time out and will be close to the pace. Furthermore, Moquett’s horses have tended to run huge races in the Arkansas Derby and if he comes forward from his first two turn race, he could be a live contender at a decent price.

There’s no denying that Firerceness’ defeat at odds of 1/5 in the Holy Bull Stakes was disappointing and he has a number of questions to answer however, he still appears to be the most likely winner based on trends. He’s proven at the distance, is the only horse with a 100+ ESF to his name (8/10 winners held that accolade) and he comes here straight out of the Holy Bull, which has been used as a prep race for three of the last ten winners. Combine these factors with the extraordinary success of both Pletcher and Velasquez in this race and he looks the horse to be putting on top. The fact that he has been kicking his work partners’ backsides in the morning does give me confidence that he wasn’t solely a precocious two year old that hasn’t trained on and you would imagine that he has tightened up for his last effort. If he’s on a going day, everyone else will be fighting for second.
